MSL forges a winning partnership with Mercedes-Benz Dealer Western Commercial.

Three years after taking delivery of its first tractor units from the latest Actros range, Scottish haulier MSL has completed its transition to an all-Mercedes-Benz fleet.

“I’ve always been impressed by Mercedes-Benz trucks, but historically we’ve operated other brands too,” explained Dave Sharp, Director of the Broxburn-based company. “Now, though, the last of those trucks has gone and every one of our vehicles has a three-pointed star on the front.

“We’ve made this move not only because the Actros is extremely fuel-efficient and very popular with our drivers, but also because the back up from our local Dealer Western Commercial is second to none.”

The company’s fleet now numbers 13 Actros – nine tractors and four rigids – most of which are double-shifted.

The three latest arrivals are all Actros 2545 tractor units. Powered by advanced 330 kw (450 hp) straight-six engines that drive through Mercedes PowerShift 3 automated transmissions, they have range-topping GigaSpace cabs with luxurious Style-Line interiors which include fridges and microwave ovens to provide a real ‘home-from-home’ environment.

“Our drivers are away three or four nights a week, so cab comfort is very important,” continued Mr Sharp. “One of the new units has been allocated to a driver who was a confirmed fan of a Swedish brand, but he loves his Actros so much that he’s now a Mercedes-Benz convert. It’s not only the living accommodation he likes; he tells me the truck also pulls really well, while its ride and handling are excellent too.”

Over the last three years the Actros has also proved to be a winner at the fuel pumps. MSL’s first vehicles were quick to impress, recording an average of 9.9 mpg. “They’ve consistently been better than anything else on our fleet,” affirmed Mr Sharp, who began his own driving career more than 20 years ago behind the wheel of a Mercedes-Benz SK Powerliner.

“Just as important as the quality of the vehicles, though, is the exceptional support we receive from Western Commercial, Broxburn. We’re both based on the East Mains Industrial Estate and have become the best of neighbours.

“The fact that the Dealer’s Service department is open through the night and at weekends means we can always get our trucks inspected and maintained at times that suit us, which allows us to restrict downtime to an absolute minimum.

“And if we ever miss an inspection appointment, for example because a vehicle is delayed and gets back later than expected, Western will always reschedule with a minimum of fuss. Service like this is invaluable.”

Privately-owned MSL takes pride in offering a comprehensive, efficient and cost effective transportation nationwide as well as a range of warehousing services. It can handle orders for anything from a single pallet to 26 pallets for same day or next day delivery, and is well used to meeting strict collection and delivery times.
