The UK’s ports will play a vital role in the nation’s ambition to become an international trading powerhouse post-Brexit, according to the Freight Transport Association (FTA), which is why it joined a new government-backed campaign: Ports for International Trade, to maximise the opportunities for economic growth and job creation in local communities as international port use soars.

Also supported by trade associations including UK Major Ports Group, British Ports Association, Maritime UK and the UK Chamber of Shipping, the initiative has received the backing of Dr Liam Fox, the Secretary of State for International Trade.

Alex Veitch , FTA’s Head of Global Policy, commented:

“With 95% of traded goods by volume arriving or departing by sea, the UK’s ports are the gateway to the world and the foundation on which a successful international trading system rests. As the UK explores new markets in the wake of Brexit, such as Asia, the Americas and Africa, ports will play a vital role in unlocking these new relationships.

“As global trade increases, FTA – along with the scheme’s other partners – want to ensure local communities reap the benefits of busier ports. This includes the anticipated creation of thousands of new jobs and an economic boost which could have far-reaching implications to the communities around the country, if managed correctly. FTA, which represents more than 17,000 logistics businesses, is thrilled to play its part in shaping the future of UK’s ports as we sail into uncharted waters and welcome new global trading partners.”

Dr Liam Fox will be giving a keynote speech at the formal launch of the UK Ports for International Trade campaign on 17 October 2018. He will be joined by senior figures from the port and maritime sectors.

Efficient logistics is vital to keep Britain trading, directly having an impact on more than seven million people employed in the making, selling and moving of goods. With Brexit, new technology and other disruptive forces driving change in the way goods move across borders and through the supply chain, logistics has never been more important to UK plc. A champion and challenger, FTA speaks to Government with one voice on behalf of the whole sector, with members from the road, rail, sea and air industries, as well as the buyers of freight services such as retailers and manufacturers.
