High temperatures pose a particular challenge for truck drivers and their vehicles. It is imperative that drivers who are out on the road for work look after themselves but also ensure that their equipment functions correctly. Experts at Kögel Trailer GmbH have compiled a list of the most important tips for carriers and drivers to ensure that transportation remains safe and stress-free, even in hot weather.

Driver well-being - Staying alert and focused in hot weather

- Adequate hydration: At least two to three litres of water or unsweetened drinks are a must every day! Dehydration can cause circulation problems. Ice-cold drinks are not recommended as they put additional strain on the circulation.

- Light meals: Eating small, light meals frequently throughout the day is the ideal option. Alcohol should be completely avoided in the heat as it puts even more strain on your circulation.

- Take breaks in the shade: Rest in the shade during breaks as this relieves the strain on your circulation. Limit the time you spend in direct sunlight. If it cannot be avoided, use sun cream, sun hat and sunglasses for protection.

- Suitable clothing: Light clothing made of natural fibres or breathable, functional materials help regulate body temperature.

- Maintaining high concentration: Heat makes us tired and reduces our ability to react. Sufficient sleep and short, regular breaks in the shade help to maintain concentration. Microsleep poses a serious risk to drivers and other road users.

- Listen to your body's warning signals: Exercise caution if you experience headaches, dizziness, drowsiness or nausea. If necessary, seek medical assistance, for example via the free DocStop hotline (008000-3627867), which is available to truck drivers in many European countries.

Vehicle safety – Making sure the technology remains reliable throughout the summer

- Keep an eye on tyres: Check tyres for damage and cracks before every journey. High temperatures increase the risk of tyre blowouts and even fire. Important: Check tyre pressure when the tyres are cold - excessively low pressure leads to increased wear. Systems such as Kögel Telematics can be used for monitoring purposes.

- Monitor cooling systems: Regularly checking the coolant level is essential to prevent the engine from overheating. The air conditioning system must also work correctly as the driver's cab will quickly turn into a sauna if it malfunctions. The temperature difference between the inside and outside should not be more than 6°C ideally. Modern telematics systems continuously monitor the engine and cooling water temperature.

- Tension tarpaulins and covers correctly: Heat causes tarpaulins to expand. Therefore, to avoid material damage, do not stretch or pull them with force. Allow some slack when tensioning to compensate for temperature fluctuations.

- Avoid heat build-up: Extreme temperatures can develop under tarpaulins or in closed loading areas. Good ventilation is therefore important - especially for self-igniting or heat-sensitive loads such as chemicals or flammable substances. Additional protective measures are required in this case.

Special care is required in summer temperatures - both around the technology and your own well-being. Paying attention to regular technical checks, adequate hydration, suitable clothing, effective sun protection and regular breaks guarantees optimal performance and comfort on the road, even in the heat.
